Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Treatment in Kitchener

Woman holding her wrist while sitting at a computerCarpal tunnel syndrome often announces itself at night. You wake up with a hand that’s numb or tingling, shake it out, and it settles. Over time it starts showing up during the day too – while driving, holding a phone, or gripping a steering wheel. Some people notice they’re dropping things more often, or that their grip isn’t what it was.

At Westheights Chiropractic in Kitchener, we assess carpal tunnel symptoms with a wider lens than the wrist alone, because the nerve involved travels a long way before it gets there.

What Is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway on the palm side of your wrist. The median nerve runs through it, along with several tendons. When that space narrows or the tissues within it become inflamed, the nerve gets compressed and the symptoms show up in the hand.

Typical symptoms include:

  • Numbness or tingling in the thumb, index, middle, and part of the ring finger
  • Symptoms that are worse at night or first thing in the morning
  • Aching or burning that can travel up the forearm
  • Weakened grip or difficulty with fine tasks like buttons and jewellery
  • Relief from shaking or flicking the hand

Why the Wrist Isn’t Always the Whole Story

Practitioner adjusting a woman's wristThe median nerve doesn’t begin at the wrist. It originates from nerve roots in the neck, travels through the shoulder and down the arm, and passes through several points where it can be compressed along the way. This matters because symptoms that look like carpal tunnel sometimes originate higher up a phenomenon where irritation at more than one point along a nerve creates symptoms neither would cause alone.

It’s why we assess the neck, shoulder, elbow, and wrist together rather than looking only at where the numbness is felt. Treating the wrist when the source is the neck rarely produces lasting change.

Common Contributing Factors

  • Repetitive hand and wrist use at work — keyboards, tools, assembly, trades
  • Sustained gripping or vibration exposure
  • Wrist positioning during sleep or at a poorly set-up workstation
  • Restricted movement in the wrist, elbow, or neck joints
  • Pregnancy-related fluid retention, which can temporarily narrow the tunnel
  • Certain health conditions affecting nerve or joint tissue

How Chiropractic Care May Help

Chiropractic care offers a conservative, non-surgical option worth exploring before more invasive approaches, particularly for mild to moderate symptoms.

Care typically focuses on restoring proper motion to the joints of the wrist, elbow, and neck, easing tension in the forearm muscles that cross the wrist, and addressing the postural and workstation patterns that keep the irritation going. Gentle, specific techniques such as Activator Methods can be useful for the small joints of the wrist, where a lighter touch is appropriate.

We also spend time on what happens outside the office: how you sleep, how your desk is set up, how you hold your tools. Carpal tunnel is frequently a repetition problem, and repetition happens at home and at work, not in our treatment room.

Where symptoms are severe, long-standing, or involve significant muscle wasting or constant numbness, surgical consultation may be the appropriate path. We’ll say so directly if that’s what your assessment suggests, and help you take the next step.

When to Get It Checked

Consider booking an assessment if you’re experiencing numbness or tingling in your hand that keeps returning, night-time symptoms that wake you, weakening grip, or hand discomfort that’s gradually worsening. Nerve symptoms tend to respond better when they’re addressed earlier.
