Cervical Radiculopathy Treatment in Kitchener

Woman holding her neck in painIt usually starts somewhere around the neck or shoulder blade, then travels. Pain runs down the arm. There may be burning, pins and needles, or a heaviness in the hand. Sometimes the neck itself barely hurts at all, which is what makes this condition so confusing — the symptoms show up nowhere near their source.

Cervical radiculopathy, often called a pinched nerve in the neck, is one of the clearest examples of something we see constantly at Westheights Chiropractic: where you feel pain is not always where the problem lives.

What Is Cervical Radiculopathy?

Nerve roots exit your spinal cord through small openings between the vertebrae in your neck. Those nerves then travel down through the shoulder, arm, and into the hand — each one supplying a specific region. When a nerve root becomes compressed or irritated where it exits the spine, symptoms appear along the entire path that nerve serves.

This is why a problem in your neck can produce numbness in your thumb, or weakness when you try to lift something. The nerve is irritated at the top; the symptoms show up at the bottom.

Common symptoms include:

  • Pain radiating from the neck or shoulder blade down into the arm
  • Burning, tingling, or pins and needles in the arm, hand, or specific fingers
  • Numbness in part of the hand
  • Weakness in the arm, grip, or shoulder
  • Symptoms that change with neck position — often eased by raising the arm overhead
  • Discomfort that worsens with prolonged sitting or looking down

What Causes It?

  • Disc bulges or herniations in the neck pressing on a nerve root
  • Degenerative changes narrowing the space where nerves exit
  • Restricted movement in the neck joints
  • Sustained forward-head posture from screens and desk work
  • Previous neck injury, including whiplash
  • Muscle tension through the neck, shoulder, and upper back

Why We Look at the Whole Picture

Man in a grey shirt getting a neck adjustmentThis condition is the reason we assess the way we do. Someone arrives concerned about their hand, and the assessment leads to their neck. Someone else arrives with neck pain and discovers their symptoms are being driven by how their shoulder and upper back have been compensating for years.

Our focus is on how well your spine and nervous system are functioning as a connected system. When joints in the neck lose their normal motion, it can affect the nerves passing through that area — and those nerves influence far more than the spot that hurts. Restoring proper movement gives the body a better environment to work with.

That’s also why many people who come in for a specific complaint end up continuing with care once it resolves. They notice things beyond the original problem — sleeping better, moving more easily, feeling less tense through the day. Pain is often what brings someone in; how they function is usually what keeps them coming.

How Chiropractic Care May Help

Care begins with a thorough assessment to determine which nerve root is involved and what’s contributing to the irritation. From there, treatment is tailored to your findings and your comfort.

This may include specific chiropractic adjustments to restore motion to restricted neck joints, using techniques such as Diversified, Thompson Drop Table, or the gentler Activator Methods where a lighter approach is appropriate. Soft tissue work helps address the muscle tension that often accompanies nerve irritation, and we’ll typically include exercises and postural guidance to support the change between visits.

Cervical radiculopathy is a condition where honest assessment matters. Symptoms involving significant or progressive weakness, symptoms in both arms, or any changes in balance, coordination, or bowel and bladder function warrant prompt medical evaluation rather than conservative care. We assess for these, and if your presentation calls for imaging or a medical referral, we’ll tell you and help you get there.

When to Get Assessed

Consider booking if you’re experiencing pain that travels from your neck into your arm, tingling or numbness in your hand or fingers, arm weakness or reduced grip strength, or symptoms that shift depending on how you hold your head. Nerve symptoms generally respond better the earlier they’re addressed.
