When you lie still for hours, your joints and muscles aren’t moving the way they do during the day. That’s one reason some stiffness can ease once you get up and start moving. If mild stiffness improves fairly quickly, it may simply be related to being still overnight.
When Stiffness Hangs Around
Stiffness that lingers or shows up nearly every morning may be worth a closer look. It can be related to how your spine and joints are moving, and a long stretch of stillness overnight may make it more noticeable.
Your sleep setup can add to it, too. A mattress that no longer supports you well, a pillow that leaves your neck at an awkward angle for hours, or a sleeping position that puts you in an uncomfortable position, including stomach sleeping for some people, may contribute to how you feel in the morning.
Stress may play a part as well. Plenty of people carry the day’s tension straight into bed, with a clenched jaw or shoulders hiked up toward their ears. For some people, that muscle tension may add to how stiff they feel when they wake up.
*”Morning stiffness can have more than one influence. Looking at how you move during the day, how you sleep, and when the stiffness shows up can help us get a clearer picture of what may be contributing.”*— Dr. Aaron Beaudry, Chiropractor
What Your Stiffness May Be Telling You
If stiffness improves with movement or changes to your sleep setup, paying attention to those patterns can be useful. Stiffness that is getting worse, wakes you at night, or comes with swelling, fever, or pain that won’t settle deserves a proper medical evaluation, as these symptoms can sometimes be associated with conditions that need further evaluation.
If you’re unsure about what you’re experiencing, it’s reasonable to have it looked at.
What We Can Do About It
A chiropractic assessment looks at how your spine and joints are moving, along with your sleep habits, activity, and daily routine. From there, we talk through options that may suit you. These can include chiropractic adjustments, gentle movement and stretching, and practical changes to your sleep setup.
Everyone responds differently, so we’ll be upfront about what to expect. If something falls outside what we do, we’ll point you toward the appropriate health professional.
